Eight year old Christian tells us about difficulties with his medication

Posted 11/01/10

Eight year old Christian from Dorset got in touch about his migraines. He told us that he had been given Pizotifen tablets (1.0mg) to take at night but that he had put on a lot of weight and was feeling moody and grumpy, and he wanted to know why he was feeling like this.

Lee Tomkins, Director of Migraine Action reassured Christian that what he was experiencing was normal for someone his age with migraine and on these tablets.  She told Christian that Pizotifen could make children and adults put on weight. They can also make you feel sad and grumpy but that this should get better as the body gets used to the medication.  We normally tell peple to try the medication for 10 - 12 weeks to see if it makes their migraines better, but if it isn't working by then they should go back to their doctor to ask his / her advice.

Have you been prescribed Pizotifen for your migraine?  Have you experienced any of the same sympoms as Christian?  Do you have any advice on how you coped that we can pass on to Christian? If so get in touch by emailing info@migraineadventure.org.uk

Remember if you have a question you can email it to us and we will ask an expert to answer it for you.  Visit the ask the expert page under the Adventure club section.
