Migraine heroes

Thank you for your entries for this years Migraine Heroes Healthcare Awards.

On Monday 5th September Migraine Action hosted its Migraine Heroes Healthcare Awards at the Leicester Tigers Rugby Football Club in Leicester. Migraine Heroes was part of our activities for Migraine Awareness Week, which runs from 4th - 10th September.

Two young migraineurs categories were announced during the presentation:

Miss Wylie, a teacher from London won the Young Migraineur Star Award after she was nominated by eight year old Amelia. Amelia told us how Miss Wylie was really understanding and even helped other teachers at the school to learn more about migraine.

Velmead School in Fleet (nominated by Ben), Catherine (nominated by her daughter Sharon), and Oliver from Hampshire (nominated by Ben) were all runners up in this category.

Thirteen year old Todd from East Sussex was chosen as the winner of the Young Migraineur Special Award after being nominated by his mum Sonya for the way he coped with his migraine and helped to educate others about his condition.

Amelia was chosen as the runner up in this category.

Thank you for all your nominations in these categories.  We look forward to receiving your entries next year.  More information will be placed under the 'Migraine Heroes' area in 2012!

Information on the 2011 awards can be found below:

Would you like to say thank you to your hero for the help or support they have given to you for your migraine?

The 'Migraine Heroes Healthcare Awards' aim to recognise special individuals and teams who have helped you with your migraine. The 'Young Migraineur Star Award 2011' category enables children and young people (aged under 18 years on 17th June 2011) to nominate an individual, group or team they'd like to thank.

They may be a family member, a friend, a teacher, teaching assistant, a club or group leader, or a healthcare professional or medical team. You may be nominating them for all sorts of reasons; they may take care of you when you feel ill, they may have shown you lots of understanding and tried to make things easier for you, they may have helped you to manage the condition, or they may cheer you up when you are feeling down.

Shortlisted entries will be invited to a special awards luncheon to take place in London during Migraine Awareness Week (Sunday 4th - Saturday 10th September 2011). Winners will receive special trophies, educational bursaries and vouchers. (Nominators and nominees will also receive a contribution towards travel expenses).

Remember, 'heroes' don't need to have done anything amazing to be worthy of an award. If an individual or team has helped you to cope with or manage your migraine in whatever way this may be we want to hear about it!

If you think other children may like to nominate their migraine heroes but might not know about the awards, you can also download a poster below and ask for it to be displayed at your school or club.

There are also lots of categories for adults who have migraine to nominate their heroes. If you know someone else, like a parent or family member with migraine, who may want to nominate someone they can find out more about the awards by visiting www.migraine.org.uk/heroes
