Acute treatments

Acute treatments

This type of medicine is used to treat an attack when it happens.

Over the counter treatments

These types of medicine don't need a prescription from your doctor and can be bought from a supermarket or a pharmacy. They can help to make your pain better when you are having a migraine.

Speed can be important; tablets that you can dissolve, work more quickly than ordinary tablets. Tablets that fizz may be best. Otherwise, you could try taking ordinary tablets with either sparkling water or a fizzy drink.

Speak to your parent / carer if you feel this medicine would help and always read the information that comes with it.

Prescription painkillers

If you find that over the counter medicine is not really working for you, speak to your parents / carers and ask them if you can see the family doctor who can prescribe some stronger painkillers which should relieve your pain and make you feel less sick.

Migraine medicine

If your migraine attacks are getting worse, your family doctor may give you some preventative tablets which you will have to take everyday; these are very good at reducing the amount of migraine attacks that you have and often makes them less painful.

There are also specific drugs known as triptans which are used to treat migraine. Adults tend to take triptans but your doctor may think they will help you and migraine.

Triptans may help to make your headaches and other symptoms better which will mean you can carry on with your normal activities within 2 hours. Your doctor may think these medicines will help you and your migraine if you get lots of attacks or your attacks are very bad. However, you should not take this type of medicine everyday or to stop attacks happening in the future.
