Why do I get migraine?

Why do I get migraine?

Changes that cause my migraine - triggers

Dehydration
Dehydration means that your body is telling you that it is feeling thirsty. Don't just think that you only need to drink when you are feeling thirsty; you should make sure that you drink 1 - 2 litres of water every day.

Foods
When you are feeling hungry you are more likely to have a migraine. It is important to kick start your day with a healthy breakfast as it is the most important meal of your day.  You should also make sure you eat regularly throughout the day.

For some of you there may be a particular type of food that can trigger your migraine. Some of the common ones are:

  • dairy products like cheese and milk
  • wheat in bread, cakes and biscuits
  • caffeine in coffee, tea, coke and other soft drinks
  • aspartame in sweetener, found in food and soft drinks
  • chocolate

If a certain food might be triggering your migraine - try something else!

Sleep and tiredness
If you've had a late night, been working hard at school or playing more sport than usual, it can make you extra tired. You should try and make sure that you are getting the right amount of sleep, not too much or too little, you should aim for 8 - 10 hours every night. Try to go to bed and get up at about the same time everyday as lie-ins and changes to sleep patterns can also trigger a migraine.

Environment
The following changes in your environment can often trigger a migraine:

  • weather
  • playing outside in strong sunlight
  • hot and stuffy rooms
  • bright lights
  • flickering or flashing lights
  • loud noises
  • strong smells

Emotions
You may be feeling stress or worried about something at school, upset or be looking forward to something exciting. These changes in your feelings can bring on a migraine.

Travelling
Sometimes travelling long distances can trigger a migraine. Take something to eat and drink with you and see if you are able to take regular breaks for some fresh air and a short walk. If you are travelling by train or plane, walk around or do some exercises in your seat.

TV and computer
Spending too much time watching TV or playing computer games can sometimes cause migraine. Make sure you don't do this for more than 3 hours a day. Take breaks away from your TV or computer and stop at least an hour before you go to bed.

Exercise
If you are not getting enough exercise or exercising too much, a migraine can happen. Be sensible about how much exercise you have. If you have a migraine after playing sport, you might find that a sugary sweet or drink before and after, can help prevent it.

Problems with your teeth
Grinding your teeth when you are awake or asleep can often bring on a migraine. If this happens you should tell your dentist.

Migraine is different for each of you but it is important to try and understand what is causing it.
