What is migraine?
Migraine information > What is migraine?
Lots of people think that migraine is just another word for a bad headache, when a migraine can make you feel very ill and prevent you from doing the things you need or want to do. You may feel that strange things happen to you before you get a migraine and sometimes this can feel a bit scary, especially the first time it happens.
If you feel like you have 2 or more of the following symptoms then it could mean you have migraine so it is a good idea to tell an adult:
- you feel like the light hurts your eyes
- you think that ordinary noises sound very loud
- you feel a bit clumsy
- you find it difficult to speak
- you have a headache
- you have pains in your tummy
- you feel sick or are sick
- you have diarrhoea
- your neck and shoulders are a bit stiff
- you have tingling or stiffness in your arms or legs
Other warning signs:
- you find it hard to concentrate
- you have difficulty in speaking
- you have blank spots in your vision
- you see flashing lights or see patterns that aren't really there
- you may really tired all over
- you may feel like you are exploding with energy
IF YOU FEEL POORLY BUT YOU CAN RUN AROUND, PLAY AND HAVE FUN YOU PROBABLY DON'T HAVE A MIGRAINE!
What do I do if I get a migraine? (A migraine attack can last anything between 1 hour and 3 days).
- do tell your parents or carers - they may decide to check with a doctor.
- you may want a cuddle from someone you love.
- you might want to sit or lie down very quietly on your own.
- you might still feel a bit less lively for a day and not want to eat very much, run around a lot or play.
- if you think you are going to be sick, ask your teacher if you can leave the classroom straight away - don't wait!
| A migraine attack won't last forever and in between attacks you will feel perfectly well and be able to do everything as usual. |
