Your migraine at home
Migraine at home > Your migraine at home
Here are some easy steps you can take at home to help prevent a migraine attack:
- Try to drink 1 - 2 litres of water each day. Dehydration can be a key trigger for an attack.
- Make sure that you don't go longer than 3 or 4 hours without food during the day, or 13 hours overnight. Breakfast is a really important meal and other additional snacks during the day help to keep your blood sugars steady.
- Have a good night's sleep (at least 8 - 10 hours a night) - tiredness can trigger a migraine attack.
- Take a break after 45 minutes of TV, games console or using your computer. The eye strain and / or flickering of the screen can trigger an attack. Make sure you don't do this for more than 3 hours a day and stop at least an hour before you go to bed.
- Fresh air and exercise are important so try to play some sports regularly with your friends.
If you are in pain, talk to your parents / carers about taking some painkillers such as paracetamol and ibuprofen. Painkillers are best taken as soon as you start to get a headache.
